Problem

While it may be common knowledge that the visualization of data improves communication, some organizations do not give their staff the tools they need to create customized visualizations of their data. Or an organization provides access to complex tools which require a lot of training to use and then the platform does not get utilized. In both cases, individual people within the organization end up creating charts and graphs based on what they already know and think looks good.

The Bush Foundation wanted more. Because of the deep amount of data and content that their team creates and shares, they wanted to develop a set of visualization templates that would be easy to deploy and use. And they wanted all of the charts, graphs, and diagrams to be on brand — to be consistently developed by all users and to follow the organization’s brand identity guidelines.

Solution

Smart Hive created over 95 templates for the Bush Foundation to use to visualize data in Powerpoint. Each of the templates contains sample data that is relevant to their work. The templates cover quantitative, qualitative, survey responses, geographic and strategic data points. All of the charts are styled to match the Foundation’s branding. We developed a Powerpoint theme for the charts, so fonts, colors, and layout would automatically be consistent across all presentations.

And we provided an accompanying style guide that includes the theory and best practices for visualizing data and instructions on how to use the templates.
